3.15.07. 12.30pm.
everyone says hi on a trail.
no, really, they do. alyson and i went hiking the other day, and every time you pass someone you all say, "hi," "how's it going," "hey." which, yeah, it's pretty perfuntery. but it's pretty cool how polite everyone is to strangers.
also, we got to a fork in the path, and thought, which way do we go? and about 30 feet down one path there was this guy standing there, arms akimbo, goofy wide-brimmed navy blue hat, just standing there looking at us. total scarecrow of oz moment. then he walked over to us, and pleasantly explained how all the paths worked and where they headed, and here, have this map of the area, i don't need it any more, i'm headed back to my car. how cool was that? took him about four seconds to transform from slightly mystical and creepy to totally friendly.
in other news, yesterday was Pi Day, march 14th. did you celebrate? you did not, and i'll tell you why. why is because 3.14 is not all that good an approximation of pi. i mean, yeah, for everyday purposes it's fine, but it's not that exact, and has no cool factor at all. if you want an approximation of pi with some caché, some style, some real je ne sais quois, you've got to go with 22/7. that's right, 22/7, with a mathematical pedigree going back to archimedes and zu chongzhi, striking just the right balance between accuracy and rationality. this is why you and i will be celebrating on the 22nd of july with Pi Approximation Day. and how will we celebrate? why, by eating approximations of pie, of course. you know, tarts, cakes, quiches, that sort of thing. and perhaps playing some math games or something. math fun!
if anyone can come up with a holiday for the celebration of i, i'll totally be there.
