Fragments
1. The trees outside my window today are blowing with the wind more than usual. They stand, though. I have not seen one fall yet, at least. There may be a lesson in this. On the other hand, a tree will stay standing even long after it is dead. Does this enhance or detract from the lesson?
2. The human capacity for endurance is staggering. A human being will go through anything he is put through, and will endure it. He will stand on a two-foot square for all eternity.(1) He will live in a box with no hope of escape, yet he will still hope for escape.(2) He will sit in a woman's room, watching her sleep, waiting on the off-chance that she will wake up, all the while hoping Please God Let Her Not Wake Up.
(Is Man therefore stupid? Answer: yes, he is, though not for this reason).
3. How I longed to fall just a little bit, to dance out of the lines and stray from the light...(3)
4. A subject sits, motionless (somewhat), attempting to marshal his thoughts and his will (what is left of them). The attempt is futile. The eyes droop, the brain wanders, the feet ache. The urge to complain or do something else is strong. Why does he stay?
